Solid vs. Engineered

Solid

Natural wood through and through. Solid hardwood offers lasting beauty and can be refinished multiple times for decades of use and added home value.

Engineered

Built with a real wood surface over a stable layered core. Authentic hardwood style with added resistance to moisture and temperature changes.

White Oak

White Oak is a versatile choice for prefinished solid and engineered hardwood, offering a tight, consistent grain and neutral light‑to‑medium brown tones that work beautifully across design styles. It stains evenly and is naturally more moisture‑resistant than Red Oak, which contributes to long‑term stability in prefinished formats. Because engineered constructions often use European White Oak, you may see more dramatic grain character in live‑sawn looks, while solid prefinished options show classic, straight, and subtle patterning. Customers who prefer very low‑variation floors may want to choose a cleaner grade, as White Oak can showcase more character depending on the cut.

Hickory

Hickory is one of the hardest domestic species available in prefinished hardwood, known for its high variation between pale sapwood and deeper brown heartwood. Its dramatic grain and bold character make it ideal for rustic, farmhouse, or lodge‑inspired designs. Prefinished Hickory—whether solid or engineered—benefits from its exceptional durability, but the species’ natural movement means engineered versions often provide enhanced stability in climates with seasonal humidity swings. Because of its distinct color shifts and busy grain, Hickory will always create a more dynamic, less uniform visual compared to species like Oak or Maple.

Maple

Hard Maple offers a smooth, fine grain look with minimal visible patterning, giving prefinished floors a clean, modern look. Its color ranges from creamy white to light tan, and it’s commonly chosen for contemporary interiors because of its subtle movement. In prefinished formats, especially darker stains, Maple can show slight color inconsistency due to its tight grain, which absorbs pigment less uniformly than species like Oak. Its smooth surface can make dents or wear more noticeable over time, so choosing textured or matte prefinished options can help reduce visible impact.

Red Oak

Red Oak is a traditional favorite in both prefinished solid and engineered hardwood, characterized by its warm undertones and distinctive open grain with cathedral patterns. It accepts stain readily, making it widely available in a broad range of colors and finishes. Its natural pinkish hue can influence the final stain appearance, especially in lighter or cooler color families. Red Oak is slightly softer than White Oak, but still durable for residential use and a consistent option across most hardwood manufacturers.

Walnut

Walnut delivers a luxurious, deep brown palette with refined and flowing grain movement. Both solid and engineered prefinished Walnut offer instant elegance and richness. It's often used in bedrooms, studies, and formal living areas. It is naturally softer than species like Oak or Hickory, so it will show wear more easily in high‑traffic areas. Walnut’s color can lighten over time with sunlight exposure, so areas with large windows may benefit from UV‑protective finishes included in many prefinished lines.

Ash

Ash provides a light, airy appearance with its blonde to soft‑beige tones and an open, linear grain that brings subtle natural movement to prefinished hardwood flooring. It’s durable and strong—comparable to Oak—making it suitable for both solid and engineered constructions. Ash availability can vary due to environmental pressures on the species, so color and grade options may be somewhat more limited compared to Oak or Maple, depending on the brand or collection. Luckily, prefinished options provide consistency and uniformity with specialized finishing options that aren't available when hardwood is finished on-site.

Birch

Birch has a gentle, understated look with fine, even grain and soft color transitions ranging from pale cream to warm reddish‑brown. Prefinished Birch flooring offers a smooth, subtle aesthetic and works well in minimalist or Scandinavian‑inspired spaces. Because Birch is slightly softer than Maple or Oak, it may develop dents more easily in high‑impact areas. Birch can display gentle natural variation in tone and grain, and prefinished options may highlight these shifts differently depending on the collection. Since most Birch offerings come in set manufacturer grades, it’s mainly about selecting the product line whose overall look matches your preference.

More About Hardwood

Site Finished vs. Prefinished

At Floor Craft, we proudly offer prefinished hardwood, which arrives from the manufacturer fully stained, sealed, and ready for installation. Prefinished flooring provides a more consistent finish, faster installation, and a look that simply cannot be achieved through site-finishing services.
We do not offer site‑finished hardwood or any refinishing services, but we’re happy to help you choose the perfect prefinished option for long‑lasting beauty and performance.

Plank Sizing

Hardwood planks typically range from 2¼" to 3¼" for traditional narrow widths and 5" to 9" for modern wide‑plank styles. Narrow planks create a more classic, traditional look with more visible seams and movement across the floor. Wide planks offer a cleaner, more spacious feel with fewer joints and a contemporary aesthetic.

Species and Finishes

Hardwood species like oak, hickory, maple, and walnut each bring their own grain patterns, color tones, and characteristics. Finishes enhance the wood’s natural beauty while offering different looks. More distressed and textured hardwood creates a rustic look, while a smooth, clean hardwood product creates a modern aesthetic. Together, species and finish determine the specific look of your hardwood flooring.

Material Info

Hardwood flooring is crafted from real wood, offering natural warmth, character, and lasting value. Whether solid or engineered, each plank showcases authentic grain variation and organic beauty that can’t be replicated.
