  • Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood is a real wood surface bonded over a multi-ply core that resists expansion and contraction unlike solid wood. That stability is exactly why it's our top recommendation for Colorado Springs: in our dry, high-altitude air, solid wood is more likely to gap or cup. It can go over concrete slabs, where solid hardwood can't, and it installs as a glue-down, nail-down, or floating floor. However, we  recommend only using hardwood on main and upper levels, never basement or below-grade levels. Most of our collection, Kährs, Hallmark Novella, Monterey, Alta Vista, and Bravada, is engineered.

  • Solid Hardwood

Solid hardwood is a single, solid piece of wood through and through, the classic choice prized for its longevity and the fact that it can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades. We carry solid options like the Hallmark Organic 4" line for homeowners who want that authentic, lifetime floor. Because solid wood reacts more to humidity swings, it performs best in climate-controlled main-floor living spaces with a stable indoor environment, and we'll walk you through proper acclimation and care for our region.

  • Wood Species & Finishes

The species and finish set the whole character of a hardwood floor. White oak and red oak give you a versatile, time-tested grain; hickory brings bold, high-contrast variation and excellent hardness; maple offers a smooth, fine, even grain. Finishes do the rest. A matte or low-sheen surface hides everyday wear, wire-brushed textures add depth and a hand-crafted feel, and wide-plank looks make a room feel open and contemporary.

Why Hardwood for Colorado Springs

The expertise centerpiece. Paste exactly:

Hardwood is a beautiful floor anywhere, but in Colorado Springs, how you choose it matters more than most homeowners realize. Our Front Range climate is dry and high-altitude, with low humidity year-round. Solid hardwood is sensitive to that dry air: as it loses moisture, planks can shrink, gap, and crack. That's why, for most Colorado Springs homes, we steer customers toward engineered hardwood. Its layered, dimensionally stable core is built to stay flat and tight in exactly these conditions, giving you the genuine look of wood with much less seasonal movement.

That doesn't mean solid hardwood is off the table, it's a wonderful, refinishable floor in the right, climate-controlled space, and we'll tell you honestly when it's a good fit. Either way, you get what people love about wood: real warmth underfoot, a timeless look that never goes out of style, and lasting value that helps at resale, since hardwood remains one of the most sought-after floors by Colorado homebuyers. Our team has been matching hardwood to local homes since 1942, we know what survives a Colorado winter and what doesn't.

Hardwood Flooring FAQs

Should I choose engineered or solid hardwood in Colorado Springs?

For most Colorado Springs homes, we recommend engineered hardwood. Our dry, high-altitude air pulls moisture out of solid wood, which can cause it to shrink, gap, or crack over time. Engineered hardwood's layered core stays dimensionally stable in these conditions while still giving you a genuine wood surface. Solid hardwood can be a great choice in climate-controlled spaces, but we'll help you decide during your free in-home estimate.

Does hardwood flooring work with radiant heat?

In most cases, yes - but the type matters. Engineered hardwood is generally the better fit over radiant heat because its stable core handles the warming and cooling cycles without gapping the way solid wood can. Not every product is rated for radiant systems, so it's important to match the floor to your setup. Bring us your details and we'll confirm which of our hardwoods are approved for radiant heat.

Can you refinish engineered hardwood?

Technically, yes- it depends on the thickness of the real wood top layer. Engineered wood products can typically be sanded or refinished once or twice, whereas solid products can be refinished several times throughout their long lifespan. It’s important to note that you’ll lose the beautiful factory-achieved finish on engineered wood by choosing to sand it down, and it’s impossible to recreate it when refinishing the flooring on-site. Prefinished hardwood products often have really special processes that go into their appearance at the time of manufacturing, and that simply can’t be replicated. If you’re worried about longevity, know that prefinished hardwoods have far thicker wear layers than site-finished ones. There’s usually no need to fully sand and refinish an engineered floor, but it’s certainly not impossible.

How much does hardwood flooring cost in Colorado Springs?

Hardwood pricing depends on the species, construction, plank width, and finish you choose, plus subfloor prep and installation. Engineered and solid hardwood both span a wide range, so the most accurate number comes from seeing your actual space. The best next step is a free in-home estimate where we'll measure, factor in any prep, and give you a clear, itemized price.

How long does hardwood flooring last?

Hardwood is one of the longest-lasting floors you can buy. Well-maintained solid hardwood can last for generations and be refinished several times along the way. Quality engineered hardwood commonly lasts 25 to 30 years or more, and those with a thicker wear layer can be refinished as needed too. In our dry climate, choosing the right construction and keeping indoor humidity stable goes a long way toward maximizing that lifespan.
