more about laminate
Standard Sizing
Laminate flooring typically comes in plank-style boards, most commonly ranging from 6" to 9" wide and 48" long to extra-long options reaching 70-89" or more. These standard sizes help laminate closely replicate hardwood visuals, while maintaining ease of installation and consistent alignment across large rooms.
Pricing
Priced per square foot, laminate is one of the most budget-friendly hard-surface flooring options compared to hardwood, offering the authentic wood look at a lower price point. Entry-level products provide reliable durability and everyday performance, while mid‑ to higher‑end laminate lines may include waterproof technology, thicker wear layers, more realistic textures, and upgraded locking systems—all of which increase value.
Material Composition
Laminate is built from multiple layers designed for strength and visual realism. A durable wear layer protects against scratches, stains, and fading; a high-definition photographic layer provides realistic wood visuals; and a dense core board—usually made from high‑density fiberboard (HDF)—adds rigidity and stability. Many modern laminates also include water‑resistant or waterproof cores, improving performance in kitchens, hallways, and other active areas. A backing layer underneath provides additional moisture resistance and comfort underfoot.
Installation
Laminate is typically installed as a floating floor, using a click‑lock system that secures planks together without glue. This makes installation quick, clean, and ideal for remodels since it can be placed over many existing subfloors. Underlayment is usually added for sound reduction and comfort. While floating installation is standard, laminate still requires a flat, well‑prepared subfloor for best results, and expansion gaps are necessary to allow the floor to move naturally with temperature and humidity changes.
