Planning your backsplash

• Measure each wall section. Multiply the length by the height of each area you're tiling, usually from the countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets, then add the sections together. Bring the numbers with you, and buy a little extra for cuts.

• Choose your layout. Subway tile can go in a classic brick pattern, a straight stack, a herringbone, and so much more. Mosaics come on sheets, so the pattern is ready-made.

• Pick your grout color. A matching grout gives a calm, seamless look, and a contrasting grout makes the pattern stand out. Our in-store team can help you find the right grout pairing and layout pattern.

• Plan the edge at the countertop. Where the tile meets the countertop, the joint gets caulk rather than grout, because the wall and countertop move slightly with the seasons. Read Grout vs. Caulk: Where Each One Belongs for the details.

Backsplash Tile FAQs

Does Floor Craft install backsplashes?

Yes. Our local installation crews install kitchen and bathroom backsplashes throughout Colorado Springs. We quote the tile and the installation together, starting with a free in-home measurement.

What kind of backsplash tile do you carry?

Subway tile, mosaics (penny round, hexagon, herringbone, lattice, square and straight joint), ceramic wall tile, glass mosaics and marble mosaics, from brands including Daltile, Emser, Arizona Tile, Bedrosians, and more. There's more to see in our showroom than on our website.

How much does it cost to install a backsplash?

It depends on the size of the area, the tile you choose, and the layout: small mosaics and patterns like herringbone take longer to set than plain subway tile. We quote the tile and the installation together after a free in-home measurement, so you see the full cost and approve it before we start.

How long does a backsplash installation take?

Typically just one day, since most backsplashes are under 50 square feet.

What grout should I use for a backsplash?

Most backsplash tile has narrow joints of 1/8 inch or less, which take unsanded grout. Unsanded grout is also the safer choice for glass and polished marble, because sand can scratch them. Wider joints take sanded grout. We can match the grout color to your tile or help you pick a contrasting one.

What goes between the backsplash and the countertop?

Caulk, because the wall and the countertop move slightly with the seasons, and grout would crack. When the grout contrasts with the countertop, such as black grout above a white countertop, we use caulk that matches the countertop so the line looks clean.

Can I install backsplash tile myself?

Yes. We sell the tile, grout, trim, and adhesive you'll need, and our team can help you choose the right materials. If you'd rather have it done for you, we can quote the installation.

Can I see backsplash tile before I buy?

Yes. Visit our showroom at 5855 N Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, to see the tile in person. Not every tile we sell is shown on our website.
