Tile Sustainability: Built to Last
Share
Summary
- Tile lasts a long time. Ceramic tile is designed for a long service life and can have a lower long‑term carbon footprint than several plastic‑based floors when you look over decades, not just the first year. Industry Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) model a 75‑year service life for ceramic tile.
- Care is simple. Tile needs only basic cleaning- no harsh chemicals required.
- Cleaner air at home. Fired ceramic and porcelain tile surfaces are naturally low‑emitting and produce almost no “new product smell.” Keep the whole job low‑odor by using low‑emitting glues and sealants that follow well‑known standards, detailed below.
What Makes Tile “Sustainable?”
It lasts- and that matters both for the environment and for your peace of mind. When a floor lasts for decades, you:
- Buy less
- Throw away less
- Avoid another remodel
The tile industry’s independent environmental report (EPD) models a 75‑year life and shows ceramic tile’s long‑term global warming impact can be lower than several plastic‑based floors like luxury vinyl (LVT/LVP) when compared under the same rules. In that comparison, LVT’s long‑term global warming potential was two to three times higher than ceramic tile.
Tile can also handle Colorado’s climate. Our winters bring frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Porcelain tile absorbs very little water (0.5% or less by test), so it can resist these intense conditions.
Healthy Indoor Air and Product Certifications
Because tile is kiln-fired at extremely high temperatures, it releases very low emissions. They don’t off‑gas like some synthetic materials. It has virtually no odor and is considered one of the lowest‑emitting flooring categories. The bigger thing to watch is the glues and sealants that hold it all together. It’s good to choose products that meet respected low‑emission rules so your project stays low‑odor from start to finish.
As technology improves, many hard surface flooring manufacturers are working to meet respected sustainability standards in their products. Two of the most trusted sustainability labels you’ll see on synthetic flooring are GREENGUARD and FloorScore. GREENGUARD certifies a wide range of indoor products for low chemical emissions with its higher standard, GREENGUARD Gold, using even stricter VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) limits to support healthier indoor environments, especially for sensitive groups like children and older adults. FloorScore, on the other hand, is a certification created specifically for hard‑surface flooring, adhesives, and underlayments, verifying that they meet rigorous indoor air quality emission requirements. FloorScore‑certified flooring is accepted by major green‑building programs such as LEED, WELL, CHPS, Green Globes, and BREEAM, making it one of the most broadly recognized sustainability benchmarks in the flooring industry. While both certifications focus on reducing VOC emissions for healthier indoor living, GREENGUARD Gold provides the strictest chemical‑emission limits, whereas FloorScore provides the most flooring‑specific assurance, helping homeowners choose products that contribute to healthier, more sustainable homes.

No Harsh Chemicals Required!
Follow these simple guidelines for maintaining your tile at home.
- Most days: Sweep or dust. Mop with clean water. If you need it, use a mild, neutral cleaner and then rinse with water so no film is left behind. This simple routine is what public‑health guidance supports for normal homes.
- Disinfecting: Only when needed. General cleaning will naturally remove most germs, but disinfecting is for special cases (for example, someone is sick). Always follow cleaner labels to avoid damaging grout or finishes!
Make the Whole Job Sustainable
- Low‑emission glues & sealants: Ask for products that meet VOC so your project stays low‑odor and healthier indoors.
- Grout that resists staining: Upgrading to high‑performance cement grout or epoxy grout can reduce the need for harsh cleaners over time. (If you choose standard grout, we’ll seal it and recommend a simple maintenance schedule for the future.)
Antimicrobial Products
Some products advertise antimicrobial additives. It’s important to know they are designed to protect the product itself from issues like odor or mildew. They cannot claim to protect people from germs unless the product is specifically registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
